1. Summary
This document summarizes an issue I encountered with the BuildMyPOD theme related to variant selection and pricing, and how I investigated and resolved it at the theme level.
Initially, we assumed the problem was on Shopify’s side and not something that could be fixed within the theme.
After a deeper analysis of the theme JavaScript, I found that the root cause was inside the theme code and was able to implement a working fix. I’m sharing these findings in case they are useful for improving the theme for all merchants.
2. Context
- Store type: Shopify store using the BuildMyPOD theme
- Issue scope: Product page – variant selection (size), Add to Cart behavior, and price display
- Comparison: The same products and variants work as expected in another theme (WeScale), which helped confirm that the issue was not Shopify core behavior.
3. Issues Observed
3.1 Variant mismatch in cart
- On the product page, selecting a different size (e.g. 3XL) visually updated the selected option.
- However, when clicking Add to Cart, the item added to the cart was still the default variant (e.g. Size S).
- This created a mismatch between what customers saw selected in the UI and what was actually added to the cart.
3.2 Mobile header price not updating in real time
- On desktop, changing the variant correctly updated the product price in real time.
- On mobile, the price shown in the product header area did not update when switching variants.
- The mobile header price only refreshed after a full page reload, which is confusing for customers.
